“In war-time, there were no men in the village. Women worked the fields, the hills. Early each morning, they would count how many fathers, husbands, and sons from the village had died since the previous night. Pain callused their hearts. When I passed them I asked if I could take a photo. There was a moment they simply forgot about what was happening in their lives,” Trinh recalled his journey in February 2017 through Hsipaw, Shan State, Myanmar. “They showed me the most beautiful thing I had ever seen in my life, their smiles.”
